Katie Vitale

IS 364
Assistant Principal
Katie Vitale has been an educator in NYC's District 19 for the past 8 years, where she has worked as an ELA teacher, Peer Instructional Coach, Master Teacher, and recently transitioned into an Assistant Principal role at IS364.  She stumbled upon the NYCUDL in 2012 when looking for an authentic way to engage scholars in argumentative writing.  Debate became such a positive force in her scholars' social, emotional, and academic lives that Katie conducted her graduate thesis on her debaters' motivation as fuel for their astounding reading growth.  Katie received her Masters degree from Bank Street School of Education's Leadership in the Arts program in 2013, and was a 2014 Big Apple Award Winner and a 2015 Hometown Heroes nominee.  She has taught debate as an elective and coached middle school and high school debate, her debaters winning second and third at state championships two years in a row, and top speaker at citywide championship.  She is excited for the opportunity to spread the power of debate throughout curriculum in her new role as an administrator!
